Call for Free Cuba Foundation members to be present at Miami Beach City Commission debate on Castro Consulate
Free Cuba Foundation members past and present have spoken out against opening a Castro Consulate in South Florida. Yesterday we addressed the Miami Beach Hispanic Affairs Committee and tomorrow at 8:00am we shall be at the Miami Beach City Commission to petition the government not to welcome the opening of a Castro Consulate that will endanger lives, property and negatively impact the economy of Miami Beach.
The argument made by some that without the Castro Consulate in Miami-Dade those who want to travel to Cuba would have to travel to Tampa get a visa is absurd. Visas are obtained through the mail. Furthermore existing Cuban consulates violate international norms by arbitrarily refusing to serve Cuban nationals. Compared with the security costs of monitoring Cuban diplomats, who are mostly spies of an outlaw regime, with an extensive history of violence around their diplomatic missions makes the case against welcoming the Castro consulate an easy one. The first duty of government is to protect its citizens.
The Free Cuba Foundation will be taking part in a joint action tomorrow convened by the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, of which it is a coalition member, to make a civic plea for the well being and security of our community.
We hope to see you there.
